Research Programmes

PSG Institute of Advanced Studies (PSGIAS) offers research program in various disciplines of engineering and science like Mechanical engineering, Nanoscience and Technology, Material Science, Biotechnology, Nanobiotechnology, Physics and Chemistry. These research programmes are intended for students who plan scholarly career involving research and teaching in the above mentioned areas of engineering and science. PSGIAS aims to foster research in scholars to have better understanding in science and engineering with global exposure and facilities. PSGIAS has dedicated and enthusiastic team of scientists in various disciplines from various leading national and international universities and institutes. The research is supported by sophisticated state of art instrumentation to work on above mentioned fields of engineering and science.

Admissions are made to M.Phil./Ph.D. program in Nanoscience and Technology, Nanobiotechnology, Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry as per the norms of Bharathiar University. Candidates are requested to visit Bharathiar university website for admission session details http://b-u.ac.in/Home/ResearchAdmissions.

The candidates are requested to check their requirement to appear for Common Eligibility test (CET) conducted by Bharathiar university every year before applying for the research programme in the institute. For CET details please visit http://www.b-u.ac.in/Home/ResearchCET

Admission and Selection Process

The candidates should apply to PSGIAS through respective universities for all the above mentioned programmes. In case of Anna University the selection is made by the Anna University and the candidates are forwarded to PSGIAS. The candidates should apply to Anna University after the release of advertisement for research program by Anna University in dailies and their website. The candidates are advised to get the concern from research guides in PSGIAS before they apply to the universities.

PSGIAS focuses its research in the leading areas of nanotechnology like advanced functional and innovative textiles, materials chemistry, catalysis, perovskites, Thin film solar cell, Organic opto-electronic devices, Organic-nano/nano- bio hybrid materials for electronic applications, Organic spintronics, Third Generation Solar cells (Organic, Pervoskite and Chalcogenide), Thermoelectric thin film devices, nanostructured thin film coatings for functional applications, structural nanomaterials, bio-inspired robotics, bulk nanomaterials, energy materials, nanofibers, nanosensor developments for detection platforms for toxic gas, explosives, biomolecule and pollutant, electrochemical sensors, biosensors, nanobiotechnology (microbial nanotechnology, biomaterials and cancer biology), polymer nanocomposites, Biological modeling, tissue engineering and water purification. Candidates can choose their own area of research based on the interest and qualification.

Rules & Regulations

  • The candidate applying for M.Phil/Ph.D are advised to select their guides after discussing with them in person.
  • The candidate may apply under the guide for M.Phil/M.S/Ph.D either under Anna University or Bharathiar University as per the supervisor’s Guideship and recommendation. (Please refer fee structure and related details of the respective university before applying).
  • Selection will be based on Entrance test and interview conducted by PSGIAS for Bharathiar University. In the case of Anna University, the procedures for admission are through entrance test and interview as conducted by Anna University.
  • A copy of the registration documents should be maintained by the supervisor and the student individually.
  • A copy of the fee receipt should be handed over to the office for records. The candidates are advised to keep the fee receipts safely till the completion of the course.
  • The candidate applying for M.Phil/Ph.D are advised to select their guides after discussing with them in person.

  • The candidates registered for full time Ph.D should appear for an Institutional Doctoral Committee (DC, as per point 3 below) once in a year (irrespective of the individual DC meetings conducted by the university) along with detailed report in the prescribed format (Annexure 1). The DC report should be submitted one week before the DC meeting date. The DC meeting will be held in every January.
  • During the first DC meeting the candidate should submit an extensive literature review. Approval of the committee is mandatory before the candidate starts his research work.
  • The DC members will be within the PSG institutions based on the area of research.
    The DC committee will have the following members

    • Research Supervisor
    • Relevant internal experts from PSGIAS
    • 1 external expert within PSG group of Institutions
    • The Director, PSGIAS
  • The candidate has to present the progress of the research work in a seminar meeting that will be held in the presence of all staff members once in a semester.
  • On successful completion of research and with due permission from the supervisor, the candidate has to defend the institutional DC one month before the date of thesis submission. The candidate will be allowed to submit the thesis only after the approval from the supervisor and the DC members.
  • The candidate should have at least two international publications (only for Ph.D) in reputed journals in the area of research before submission of the thesis failing which the candidate will not be eligible for thesis submission.
  • The eligible date of submission will be the same as per the university norms.
  • The full time candidates are eligible for a total leave period of 15 days per year with recommendation of the supervisor. In special cases prior approval from The Director, PSGIAS with recommendation of the supervisor is mandatory. For part time candidates the candidate should show a minimum attendance of 60 days per year.
  • The candidate should submit no due certificate from the office, Library, hostel and finance section in the prescribed format (Annexure II) duly signed by the authorities before the submission of the Thesis/ dissertation.
  • A public/open viva voce examination will be conducted as per the University norms at PSGIAS.
